News and verified status for Unreal Engine 6, Rocket League, and the engines they replace.

Briefing · Issue 001 · Pricing Updated 2026-05-25

Is Unreal Engine 6 free? UE6 pricing is not announced.

UE6-specific pricing has not been published by Epic. The honest baseline is current Unreal Engine: free to download for game development, with a 5% royalty on lifetime gross revenue above $1M per game. UE6 is expected to inherit those terms but Epic has not confirmed it.

§01 · Quick Answer

Two cards. No marketing fluff.

§02 · Pricing Scenarios Matrix

Six scenarios, UE5 vs UE6.

Scenario UE5 today UE6 Status
Game developer, lifetime gross under $1M Free, no royalty Likely same baseline; UE6-specific terms not announced Estimated
Game developer, lifetime gross above $1M 5% royalty on gross above threshold Royalty structure not confirmed for UE6 Unknown
Game shipped on Epic Games Store (UE-built) Royalty waived on EGS sales Likely same baseline; not announced for UE6 Estimated
Non-game commercial use (film / AEC / sim) Seat-based Unreal Subscription Seat-based likely; UE6 pricing not announced Estimated
Student / educator Free for learning use Likely same; not announced Estimated
Custom enterprise licensing Available via Epic Games sales Same path expected; UE6 terms not announced Estimated
§03 · What Could Change

Three directional clues.

  • Epic's broader business push (Epic Games Store, Fortnite creator ecosystem, Verse) suggests UE6 will preserve the "free for game devs, royalty after a threshold" posture, because that posture is part of how Epic competes with Unity.
  • The UEFN / Fortnite creator ecosystem operates on a different revenue share. UE6's relationship to that ecosystem is unconfirmed, so its licensing implications are unconfirmed.
  • Non-game enterprise pricing has historically been seat-based and negotiated. We expect UE6 to extend that model rather than overhaul it — but that is Estimated, not committed.
§ FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Is Unreal Engine 6 free?

UE6-specific pricing has not been announced by Epic. Current Unreal Engine terms — which UE6 is expected to inherit, though not confirmed — let game developers download and use the engine free of charge, with a 5% royalty owed on lifetime gross revenue above $1,000,000 per game.

02

Does Unreal Engine have royalties?

Yes for game development above $1M lifetime gross per game. See Epic's official license page for current terms and the non-game (linear film, AEC, simulation) seat-based subscription.

03

Could UE6 pricing change?

Yes. Until Epic publishes UE6-specific licensing terms, treat any 'UE6 will cost X' article as speculation.

04

Where is the official Unreal Engine license?

Epic publishes it at unrealengine.com/license. Always verify there rather than relying on third-party summaries.
