UE6 vs UE5: what might actually change.
Comparing a shipping engine with one that has been teased once is unusual. We do it explicitly — column by column — so you can see what is known, what is estimated, and what is unknown.
Ten dimensions. Side by side.
Every row carries one of four status labels. Estimated and Unknown are open questions, not facts.
| Dimension | Unreal Engine 5 | Unreal Engine 6 | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release status | Available today (5.x stable) | Not released. Public tease May 24, 2026. | Confirmed |
| First public game | Multiple shipped titles since 2022 | Rocket League teaser at RLCS Paris Major | Confirmed |
| Rendering foundation | Nanite + Lumen + Virtual Shadow Maps | Not published | Unknown |
| Multi-threading | Improved in 5.x; still bottlenecked | Targeted as an explicit improvement area | Estimated |
| Shader compilation | Long-running community pain point | Improvement not confirmed | Unknown |
| Scripting language | Blueprints + C++; Verse in UEFN separately | Verse-in-UE6 not confirmed as core | Unknown |
| UEFN / Fortnite tech | UEFN ships as sibling product | Some convergence discussed publicly | Estimated |
| Migration cost (UE5 → UE6) | Native | Unknown until tooling exists | Unknown |
| Pricing model | 5% royalty above $1M lifetime gross | UE6-specific terms not announced; UE5 baseline likely | Estimated |
| System requirements | Documented for dev and play | Not announced | Unknown |

Direction is signalled. Benchmarks are not.
UE5's headline performance problems are stutter caused by shader compilation, single-threaded bottlenecks in certain subsystems, and Nanite memory pressure on lower-end GPUs. Epic has signalled that UE6 prioritises multi-threading and foundation work, which is encouraging language but not a benchmark.
We tag this as Estimated with medium confidence — the direction is consistent across multiple Epic statements, but no UE6 benchmark exists.
If you are choosing between starting a project on UE5 now or waiting for UE6, the engineering-honest answer is start on UE5: UE6 has no preview build, no migration tooling, and no public timeline.
Do not migrate yet. Here's why.
No Preview Build
No UE6 preview means no migration tooling, no compatibility matrix, no known regression list.
No Public Spec
Any "UE5 to UE6 migration guide" you find today is fan speculation. Real assessment requires Epic preview.
Practical Guidance
Pin a recent 5.x branch, document engine-specific dependencies, avoid hand-edited engine source.
